YOU GOT ANOTHER THING COMIN

I drew my sword, and the dragonfly tattoos flared to life. A new one was on my chest, pulsed under my shirt near my heart—Nureus’ piece of Daphne. Rafa, if it was him, paused on the trail. He was dressed like he was headed to a heavy metal show at the Cow Palace—black leather pants, black T-shirt, and matching black leather vest. “It’s been bizarre since I last saw you, and that’s saying something. How about you prove you are you?” I called out.

Rafa tapped his black leather-clad thigh. “This is where that prick, Proteus, bit me—nearly ripped my leg off. It took some time to heal, and you were on your way by then.”

I lowered the sword but didn’t scabbard it. “What’s with the low-rent muscle?” I nodded my head at the bag phone on the trail. Rafa went over and picked it up.

“I can’t be everywhere. Everyone higher up the criminal food ladder would rather kill you for the bounty. I use what I can.”

I grinned. “Glad to see you made it. What happened?”

“After I healed, I veiled, then mingled with those search parties at the Presidio and kept my ears open.” I nodded; TMZ had shit on bored soldiers for spreading gossip. “I think I know what’s going on over on Alcatraz.” He looked around. “By the way, where is said muscle?” I pointed back up the trail.

“Sleeping it off.”

“Is he alive?”

I nodded. “They both are.”

Rafa peered at me. “I only hired one to watch the gate at Alameda. The one that goes with this bag.” We both turned to look up the trail and saw the first guy I had taken out, Captain Kegger, walking back toward us through the brush, a livid bruise around his neck where I had choked him out, his pale beer belly swaying with each step.

“Apparently, he sub-contracted the job,” I muttered to Rafa. “Do you still need to pay them? I mean, end of the world and all, we’re running out of time. Can you Venmo it or something?”

Rafa dropped the bag, held out his hand, and his flaming sword blazed out of his closed fist. “That is a Corrupted.” I turned back, and Captain Kegger now sported the glowing milky-green eyes and mouth of a Corrupted. “Kill it before it can summon a horde!” Dark wings of shadow spread and slapped together; there was a violent thunderclap, and Rafa and I were hurled to the ground in a storm of dust and rain of leaves ripped from the trees as the Corrupted rushed toward me, wailing its banshee cry, flaming swords appearing in both its hands.

I rolled to my feet and parried as fast as I could move the katana. This one was faster than the ones in the tunnel. Much faster. I blocked a double-bladed strike and was hurled backward by the force behind the fiery swords. Rafa rushed into the fray, a whirling tornado of inhuman speed with a flaming blade at its heart.
